How to Become a Football Referee in Houston: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you're interested in becoming a football referee in the Houston area, joining your local chapter through the Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO) is the first step toward officiating high school football, including UIL games. Whether you're new to officiating or returning after time away, following the registration process will get you on the field and ready for the upcoming season.
Step 1: Pay Your TASO State Dues
Visit TASO.org and complete your state registration. During the registration process, be sure to select the Houston Chapter as your local chapter.
Step 2: Complete the Houston Chapter New Member Application
After you receive your TASO ID number, complete and submit the Houston TASO Football New Member Application at:
https://www.htasofootball.com/new-officials/
Please note that the application portal may not be open year-round, so check the website for current availability.
Step 3: Pay Your Houston Chapter Dues
Once you have received your TASO ID number and your account has been activated, the Chapter Executive Secretary will send you an email with instructions for accessing ZebraWeb.
You can then pay your Houston Chapter dues through ZebraWeb.org.
Step 4: Attend New Official Training
Training is one of the most important parts of becoming a successful football official. After joining the chapter, you'll receive the schedule from the Houston Chapter's New Member Training Coordinator.
These training sessions cover:
- UIL football rules and mechanics
- Position responsibilities
- Game management
- On-field communication
- Penalty enforcement
- Professional officiating techniques
